Orange County, NC is mostly widely known as the home of the "Tarheels" of the University of North Carolina. The University of North Carolina, located in Chapel Hill, is the oldest state supported school of higher education in the country. Located in the southeastern portion of the county, Chapel Hill and its neighbor, Carrboro, are bustling college towns. In contrast, the remainder of Orange county consists mainly of small communities. The seat of the county government is located in historic Hillsborough in the center of the county. Northern Orange County is farm country where you will see fields of corn, soybeans, and tobacco along with cows, bison, chickens and goats. Beautiful lakes and rivers lend to aesthetic beauty of this area.
There are two school districts in Orange County - the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and the Orange County School District.
Southern Orange County
Chapel HillChapel Hill, located in Orange County, is the home of the University of North Carolina Tar Heels. Located in the southeastern section of Orange County, Chapel Hill is a typical college town bustling with activity both day and night. Although UNC is nationally known for its basketball and football teams, its most outstanding contribution to North Carolina is its UNC Health Care System and associated medical school. The UNC Health Care System has several hospitals and special care facilities located in Chapel Hill and surrounding areas.
CarborroCarrboro is located next to Chapel Hill in Orange County. Carrboro is a favorite place for UNC students because of its variety of restaurants and local venues. Many of the local restaurants feature chef-inspired menus that are created from organic, locally grown vegetables and meats from the Carrboro's Farmers Market. Art and theater venues include the Cat's Cradle, the Carrboro Arts Center, and the DSI comedy theater - so there is always something of interest. Each year the town also hosts a two-day music festival and a film festival.
Northern Orange COunty
HillsboroughHistoric Hillsborough is a small town located in Orange County, NC. It is the seat of the county government. In addition to the numerous historic sites, Hillsborough has many art galleries and stores that feature the works of local artisans. Artisans, residents and tourists can be seen enjoying the relaxed atmosphere and conversations at many of the local restaurants and coffee shops. During nice weather, residents and tourist enjoy the Riverwalk, an urban greenway that follows the Eno River corridor through Hillsborough. Downtown Hillsborough hosts a variety of interesting, educational, and fun events throughout the year ranging from books readings to the annual Christmas parade. The Sportsplex, located near downtown, features an ice rink, indoor pool, gym and programs for sports enthusiasts of all ages. Next to the Sportsplex, a Senior Citizens Center offers activities and amenities of interest to our seniors.
